Paul Jones & Co "Comrades for 81 Years" Self-Framed Tin Lithograph. Measures 22.25"x28.25."Don asked me to research this piece many years ago. The following is what I provided to him….Paul Jones & Co. Louisville, Kentucky Self Framed Tin Litho Sign measuring 22 1/4 x 28 1/4. The old time is smiling and holding a glsss, just filled with Paul Jons sPure Ry Whiskey. The caption at center below reads, "Comrades for 81 Years". Tjos {re-Prohibition sign was manufactured in 1903 by the H.D.Beach Co., Coshocton, Ohio. and remains in Very Good original condition. Could use a good cleaning and wax if desired by the new owner. These self framed pre-prohibition multi-colored advertising signs are very popular with collectors and becoming much harder to find in original, un-touched condition. Company History:Paul Jones(1887-1893), Paul Jones & Co. (1884-1919) and the Business was loctaed at 136-140 E. Main in Louisville, Kentucky from 1887-1909. Paul Jones began making Whiskey in Georgia back in 1865. In 1866 he moved to Louisvill. In 1889 Jones purchase the J G Mattingly & Bro. Distillery for $125,000. at public auction. It ran as J G Mattingly Co., with Jones as President, until the plant was sold to the Trust in 1902. In 1922, Paul Jones & Co. bought out Frankfort Distillery Inc. The Frankfort distillery was one of the few companies granted a permit to sell liquor for medicinal purposes during Prohibition. By 1928 stocks of pre-Prohibition whiskey had dwindled and the company contracted the Louisville Based Ph. Stizel distillery to supply them with spirits. When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Frankfort Distilleries Inc. took over the old Stitzel plant and built a new one (FOUR ROSES) in Shively. By the late 1940’s, the distilleries and the brands had been taken over by Seagrams.
